Care should be taken when using this data. The Register of Landscapes of Historic Interest in Wales has been divided into several areas called Historic Landscape Character Areas. This dataset contains the boundaries of these areas. The dataset is jointly owned by the Archaeological Trusts and Cadw. Cadw is the Welsh Governments historic environment service working for an accessible and well-protected historic environment for Wales. The datasets are essential for NRW in planning casework, to determine if particular developments will have an impact on a historic landscape. In collaboration with Cadw and the Archaeological Trusts jointly promotes the use of the Register and the Historic Landscape Character areas in the planning and development system, in which historic landscapes are a 'material consideration'.

Once all datasets from the Archaeological Trusts are in place the aim is to combine the datasets to create an all-Wales dataset showing all the Historic Landscape Character Areas in all the registered historic landscape areas. The datasets may be updated if the Registers are altered, or areas added to it in future by Cadw.

Cadw conserve Wales’s heritage; help people understand and care about their history; and, help sustain the distinctive character of Wales. Cadw is a Welsh word meaning ‘to keep’ or ‘to protect’.
