Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) Biophysical Data Layer Project (3rd Party Data)
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are a clearly defined geographical space, recognised, dedicated and managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long-term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values. This network of MPAs will help meet commitments under the Convention on Biological Diversity and contribute to the measures needed to achieve Good Environmental Status across Europe’s seas by 2020 under the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive. The United Kingdom (UK) is committed to the establishment of a network of MPAs to conserve marine ecosystems and marine biodiversity. Selection of MPAs should be based on best available biological, physical, oceanographic and socio-economic data. Defra and partners have commissioned a consortium lead by ABPmer Ltd and partners to take forward a package of work to provide this data. This dataset contains the project outcomes. The purpose of this data capture was to collect the data that will be required for designating new MPAs following the Marine Bill. The overall aim is to ensure that the best available information is available for the selection of MPAs in UK waters, and that the data layers can be easily accessed and utilised by those whom will have responsibility for selecting sites. The data layers will also be of use in taking forward marine planning in UK waters. The project has been divided into a number of discrete tasks each of which has a specific temporal coverage (see separate metadata entries which will be added as and when tasks are completed). Data used is loosely taken between the following dates 1982-2008.

This data is jointly owned by NRW, DEFRA, JNCC and various other recorders. NRW have signed a licence with regards to the access and use of this dataset. Parts of the dataset are restricted, please see individual metadata entries for details. Restricted data layers include: - Bathymetry data layer (SeaZone licence required) - Light penetration layer (SeaZone licence required) - Wave disturbance layer (SeaZone licence required) - Biological zone layers (SeaZone licence required) - BGS habitat layers (BGS licence required) - Modelled BGS habitat communities (BGS licence required) - Deep sea habitat layers (SeaZone licence required) Some layers may only be made available at reduced resolution e.g. sensitive features. Please refer to individual metadata entries for each of the project tasks for more information.
