Field surveys were undertaken. The boundary of the survey area was constructed on standard patterns imposed upon the landscape in relation to the location of known marsh fritillary sites. Marsh fritillary records are plotted on a map (preferably via GIS) and then circles of a one kilometre radius are drawn from each record. Where there are several records for a particular enclosure one circle is drawn from the centre point of these records. After plotting the record circles, overlapping circle areas are then combined (this can be done automatically on GIS) to produce the final landscape boundary. Once the landscape boundaries have been drawn the next stage is to undertake a preliminary sift by examining Phase One survey maps and plotting the location of examples of a variety of habitat categories. Within each enclosure patches were mapped according to the specific definitions and ideally drawn onto recent aerial photographs of a suitable scale (preferably 1:10,000 or better) in the field. Failing this 1:10,000 OS maps should be used.
