Audit of Marsh Fritillary (Euphydryas aurinia) Habitat Management in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council (CBC) (3rd Party Data)
The Marsh fritillary Euphydryas aurinia is a UK Biodiversity Action Plan (UK BAP) priority species and has been listed by the Welsh Government as species of Principal Importance for the Conservation of Biological Diversity in Wales (Section 74 species Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000). This species is now confined to the south-western counties of England, south and west Wales, western Scotland and Ireland. There is some evidence to suggest that the species range is continuing to contract along eastern edge having previously been lost in central and eastern parts of England. It has also become scarcer within this range with healthy populations now any appearing to persist where there is sufficient habitat to support their meta-populations (dynamic network of colonies) in which the species naturally occurs. Nevertheless in parts of this range its status maybe poorly known due to recording issues. For species existing in meta-populations, as is the case with many of our scarce butterflies, the quality and abundance of available habitat within colonising distance of local populations is extremely important. In Wales there is increasing emphasis on mapping these patches of habitat to complement surveys of marsh fritillary Euphydryas aurinia adults and larval webs. This dataset consists of an ArcMap layer of the condition of habitat polygons for marsh fritillaries in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council (CBC) to help inform planning decisions. The purpose of this data capture was to ascertain the extent and condition of habitat capable of supporting populations of marsh fritillaries in order to provide scientifically-justified guidance to inform planning decisions.

An area of 306 ha was covered by field surveyors across Merthyr Tydfil CBC. The boundary of the survey area was constructed on standard patterns imposed upon the landscape in relation to the location of known marsh fritillary sites. Marsh fritillary records are plotted on a map (preferably via GIS) and then circles of a one kilometre radius are drawn from each record. Where there are several records for a particular enclosure one circle is drawn from the centre point of these records. After plotting the record circles, overlapping circle areas are then combined (this can be done automatically on GIS) to produce the final landscape boundary. Once the landscape boundaries have been drawn the next stage is to undertake a preliminary sift by examining Phase One survey maps and plotting the location of examples of a variety of habitat categories. Within each enclosure patches were mapped according to the specific definitions and ideally drawn onto recent aerial photographs of a suitable scale (preferably 1:10,000 or better) in the field. Failing this 1:10,000 OS maps should be used. This dataset is considered of high quality collected under contract by experienced surveyors.
