Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland (BSBI): Rare Plants Register for Wales (3rd Party Data)
This dataset is wholly owned by Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland (BSBI) which has been licensed to Natural Resources Wales (NRW) for use. County Rare Plant Registers are prepared by Botanical Society of the British Isles (BSBI) using data from Vice-county recorders from a range of data sources including their own records, those sent to them, and those seen from other sources including Local Environmental Records Centres (LERCs). Records are validated by recorders, and provide a summary of the best available data for selected species including: - Red Data species: A subset of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red Data Book criteria and categories related to species in the UK - Section 42 species: The Section 42 list of habitats and species of principal importance in Wales is the definite list and is a key requirement of the National Environment Research Council (NERC) Biodiversity Duty. - Nationally Rare and Scarce species: Excludes rare species qualifying under the main IUCN criteria. - Locally Rare (and sometimes Scarce) species: A species should be defined as 'locally rare' if it was known to be present within three or fewer 'sites' within a vice-county.

The data was collected using field surveys spread across Wales. There are certain attributes which are considered essential to include in recording. - For each species: Botanical Name, Vernacular Name (preferably just the standard one), Reason for Inclusion (including international/national category if applicable). - For each location under each species: Date (usually the most recent year), Grid Reference, Location. The combined data from all available County Rare Plant Registers forms three GIS layers, showing the plant locations at 100m (point data), 1km or 10km square scale.
