British Geological Survey (BGS): 250k Onshore and Offshore Geology (3rd Party Data)
The British Geological Survey (BGS) is a UK provider of geoscientific data, information and knowledge. Natural Resources Wales has licenced access to a number of BGS datasets. This particular spatial data is a collation of licenced data from DiGMapGB-250, DigSBS250 and DigRock250 all of which depict the data at a scale of 1:250,000.

NRW has access to: - 250k Onshore Bedrock: The geological areas (or polygons) are labelled or attributed with a name (based on their lithostratographical, chronostratographical or lithodemic nomenclature) and their composition (rock type or lithology). This information is arranged in two themes: bedrock geology and faults. - 250k Marine Bedrock: The overlying column of sea-water imposes major limitations offshore that makes it impossible to use normal, onshore, geological mapping techniques. However, other techniques such as ship-board geophysical surveys can be used that allow geological interpretations using evidence not normally available onshore. Onshore, a lithostratigraphical nomenclature is used with rocks routinely mapped at formation, member and bed level. Offshore, this is often impossible and rocks are commonly referred to by age. Where it is possible, mapping is usually only to group or formation level at best, and even these may not be differentiated into individual units, but shown only as part of a package of units. -250k Marine Sediments: The overlying column of sea-water imposes major limitations offshore that makes it impossible to use normal, onshore, geological mapping techniques. However, other techniques such as ship-board geophysical surveys can be used that allow geological interpretations using evidence not normally available onshore. The sea-bed sediments theme is only mapped offshore, where it commonly forms a veneer on the sea bed. The map is based on sea-bed grab samples of the top 0.1 m, combined with cores and dredge samples as available. A standard Folk triangle classification has been used based on the gravel percentage and the sand to mud ratio.
