Effects of Air Pollution and Climate Change on Welsh Calcicolous Ecosystems (3rd Party Data)
This dataset is comprised of the welsh component of a larger dataset of 128 plots spread over 56 calcicolous grassland monitoring sites in the UK. In Wales there are 17 plots over 9 calcicolous grasslands. The sites surveyed were eight National Nature Reserves (NNR's): Cadair Idris, Craig Cerrig gleisiad, Craig y Cilau, Cwm Idwal, Ogof Ffynnon Ddu, Snowdon, South Gower, Stackpole, and one Site of Species Scientific Interest (SSSI): The Great Orme. The idea behind the work was to create a network of calcicolous grassland sites to look at the effects of air pollution and climate change on these sites.

Vegetation was recorded using the NVC classification system in 36 quadrats at each plot. All vascular plants, bryophytes and macro lichens rooted within the quadrat were recorded as qualitatively present. Cover of individual species was not recorded, the overall frequency of species among the quadrats in each plot providing an indication of quantitative presence and an easily repeatable profile of the grassland composition at that location. For each plot environmental data - altitude, slope, aspect, soil type, surface pH and underlying geology have been recorded. The work was carried out by the Unit of vegetation Science at Lancaster University under the guidance of John Rodwell, an expert in NVC vegetation classification. Sub-set of a UK-wide dataset called Effects of Air pollution and climate change on Calcicolous ecosystems.

We think that this project was set up by Defra, with the data being collect by the Institute of Terrestrial Ecology (ITE) now known as Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH). The project looked at air pollution across Wales, and built upon the data collected as part of the International Biological Data, all of which formed the baseline datasets helping initiate the Snowdon Environmental Change Network site.
