Bat Records from National Trust Properties in Wales (3rd Party Data)
This is a third party dataset containing records from the National Trust Recorder 2002 species database extracted in March 2007. These datasets include records of all bat species commonly found in Wales and are split into 5 separate surveys. The National Trust licenced these datasets for use by former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) and CCW staff only under their Access Agreement. This Access Agreement has now been outdated. The purpose of this data capture was to conduct bat surveys across National Trust sites in Wales.

Records come from a wide variety of sources including Biological Survey Reports, Bat Surveys and ad hoc records. Dataset supplied by National Trust, originally exported from Recorder 3.3 and Recorder 2002. It may also contain duplicates with datasets already held by CCW. The dataset contains validity codes for species identification as follows: National Trust Validity codes (A/B/C) were included in Occurrence Comment field for most records (often with further details as appropriate, including roost type, further ID info, etc) This is taken from notes relating to our previous bat database (which was incorporated into Recorder, subsequent records will follow this pattern). A - No question about the ID. In the hand, close inspection or unequivocal view plus bat detection sounds. Plecotus would be in here but not brown long-eared unless positively separated from grey long-eared. Species of small Myotis (daubentonii, nattereri, mystacinus, brandtii) would not normally be in A unless examined in the hand or very close inspection. B - Includes bat detector records of most species by competent bat workers. In here is long range heterodyne calls where the bat is not seen Nyctalus and Eptesicus. Heterodyne records of noctule were not put in A- so few people positively separate it from Leisler's (or even serotine). Also in here is brown\ long-eared that has not been positively separated from 'grey' Daubenton's records solely from small Myotis zooming around a water body and virtually all 'whiskered' and 'Brandt's'. C- Bat record species not known."
