All Wales Phase 1 Terrestrial - 1Kmsq
This is a spatial dataset made up of point dataset of Phase 1 habitat areas in every 1 km square in Wales.
The data are derived from a programme of field recording that was begun by the Nature Conservancy Council (NCC) in 1979 and continued by the former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) after restructuring in 1991. The original field surveys were carried out as part of a national habitat survey programme required to implement conservation at a local level.
This electronic dataset was created for the generation of national statistics on habitat coverage (see metadata for All Wales Phase 1 Terrestrial - 1kmsq - Access database). The dataset was subsequently imported into a GIS to enable its disaggregation into various different geographical regions within Wales. Habitat areas are summed over regions and districts within 1 km squares. Version 2 is a point layer of 1 km square centroids; habitats are labelled with Phase 1 lettered and alphanumeric codes; a 'modbog' column identifies whether modified bog (E.1.7, E.1.8 and E.4) is derived from blanket bog or raised bog; habitat areas are given for upland, lowland and total. Version 3 was derived to facilitate data disaggregation and reporting. In it areas of heath-grass mosaics (D.5, D.6 and D.7) are split 50:50 between the appropriate heathland and grassland classes; modified blanket bog is labelled E.1.6.1.2 and modified raised bog is labelled E.1.6.2.2; the Phase 1 fen categories are combined as E.3 and modified fen as E.3.1; the saltmarsh categories are combined as H.2.6; limestone pavement is combined with basic rock; intertidal habitats are removed because they were mapped in greater detail by CCW's Phase 1 Intertidal Survey (1996-2005). Version 3 comprises a non-mappable browser table of habitat areas per 1 km square, a table of 1km square centroids and a table of 1 km square polygons. The three tables link on the grid square field.

The Field survey spanned from 1979 to 1999. Closely co-ordinated teams of surveyors carried out field recording of habitats onto 1:10,000 scale maps (rarely 1:25,000 during the upland stage). The minimum size of habitat patch recorded lies predominantly within the range 0.1 - 0.25 ha, although smaller areas were mapped in the lowlands. The survey methods employed during the initial upland stage are given in more detail in a WFU report (Day, A. (1989) Upland Vegetation Survey 1979-1989 Background Methodology and Summary of Data Collected. NCC, Bangor). Methods for the lowland survey followed the Handbook for Phase 1 Habitat Survey with some minor modifications adopted for use in Wales (Howe E.A. and Blackstock T.H. (1991) Supplementary Notes for Phase I Survey in Wales. CCW, Bangor).
All field mapping was carried out by trained and closely co-ordinated teams of surveyors. A study of survey reliability was conducted during the lowland phase (Kerry, Rimes, Smith, Williams. 1994. An Assessment of Errors in Phase I Habitat Survey in Wales. Bangor: Countryside Council for Wales, Report No. 94/4/1). It showed the field mapping to be 83% repeatable (Stevens, Blackstock, Howe, Stevens. 2004. Repeatability of Phase 1 habitat survey. J. Environ. Manage. 73, 53-59).
The electronic data have undergone a series of checks for accuracy both by the contractor and subsequently within CCW.
