The purpose of this data capture was to report on the presence, distribution and likely status of red squirrels in Aberhirnant Forest and the Lake Vyrnwy area. The data is will be used as a basis to assess whether red squirrels have a future in this area, that is, sufficient potential to justify further monitoring and sympathetic forest management. The target sites included conifer plantations of Aberhirnant Forest and the catchment area of Lake Vyrnwy. A follow up survey was commissioned by CCW in 2001. An initial survey of 17 grids of hair tubes were set out in Aberhirnant Forest and 2 in the Lake Vyrnwy Plantation in 1999. Each grid consisted of 20 hair tubes in four rows each of 5 tubes. Each row was 100 m apart and the tubes were 100 m apart in the rows. Tubes were fixed to trees and baited. These were then checked every two weeks and hairs deposited in the tubes were checked by eye and verified under a microscope using the negative staining technique where necessary. Grid references have been estimated from a map. A total of 1290 records were taken, of which 45 were positive. This original survey was carried our between 1999 and 2000.
