Skomer Marine Conservation Zone ( MCZ ) - Condition Monitoring of Eunicella verrucosa
In 2015 Skomer Marine Nature Reserve changed designation to Skomer Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ). Skomer Marine Nature Reserve (MNR) was designated in 1990. Eunicella verrucosa is a feature of the marine nature reserve, it is at the edge of it's distribution range and is a potential indicator of climate change. Eunicella verrucosa colonies around the Skomer MNR have been photographed and assessed for condition since 1992. Colonies are revisited every year and assessed for: Presence, damage, epi-foulants, entanglement, growth, necrotic tissue and the presence of Tritonia nilsodherni and Simnia patula. Eunicella verrucosa is a UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) species and information is used for BAP reporting.
