Collation of Images for Use in the Promotion of Marine Biodiversity in Wales
A significant remit of the Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) process is to raise awareness of biodiversity, both with the public and other stakeholders. Raised awareness leads to better understanding, appreciation and ultimately, the public taking greater responsibility for biodiversity. Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP) partnerships in particular, are well placed for this role as they operate on a local scale, able to engage local communities, partners and visitors to an area. Inability to easily access high quality marine images is often a hindrance in this process. The purpose of this project was to collate high quality images of marine BAP habitats and species (both Welsh and local priorities), and also images of general Welsh marine biodiversity.

Images to illustrate marine biodiversity were sourced in three different ways: - from CCW in-house collections of slides; - by commissioning new photographs; - and, from outside sources. For each of these three methods a target list of habitats, species and features was provided by CCW. The slides have been scanned at high resolution (4000 dpi) to produce uncompressed tif files (approx 56 MB each) and jpg files (approx 2 MB each). The tif files are held as archive copies on DVD by NRW.
