In the case of a single large rockpool a series of sampling points measuring 1m2 were surveyed to gain a representative species list, other species that fell outside the sampling area were also noted. Timed counts were carried out over two minute periods for key characterising species (Patella vulgata , Littorina littorea, Pagurus bernhardus, Nucella lapillus, Gibbula umbilicalis) to give an indication of abundance.
