This is a follow-up to the "Squirrel survey of Aberhirnant Forest and woodland surrounding Lake Vyrnwy 1999 - 2000". The purpose of this data capture is to inform work to remove grey squirrels in the area as well as gather further information about red squirrel populations. The survey locations were conifer plantations of Aberhirnant Forest and the catchment area of Lake Vyrnwy. An initial survey of 17 grids of hair tubes were set out in Aberhirnant Forest and 2 in the Lake Vyrnwy Plantation in 1999. Each grid consisted of 20 hair tubes in four rows each of 5 tubes. Each row was 100 m apart and the tubes were 100 m apart in the rows. Tubes were fixed to trees and baited. These were then checked every two weeks and hairs deposited in the tubes were checked by eye and verified under a microscope using the negative staining technique where necessary. A subsequent survey in 2001 used 2 grids with 30 traps. Additional tube hair traps were also set. A total of 120 records were taken, of which 53 were positive. Grid references are estimated from map.
