Squirrels of Central Wales - Collation of historical records (1950 - 1999)
The red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is Britain's only native squirrel and has experienced a severe decline in England and Wales over the last 50 years. This decline is linked to the expansion of its larger relative the grey squirrel S. carolinensis, which was introduced into Britain from North America in the late nineteenth century. The exact mechanisms of displacement are not fully understood, but it appears that grey squirrels are better able to utilise food resources in broadleaved woodland, with the result that red squirrels generally disappear from such habitats within about 15 years of the arrival of greys. This dataset is a collation of red squirrel sightings for central Wales. The purpose of this data capture was to collate all records of red squirrels from central Wales in order to identify remaining areas of refuge for this species. The data was also collated to provide the initial recommendations for conservation actions. Brief habitat assessments of the remaining red squirrels sites were provided, based on forest area, tree species composition and age structure. Forest configuration, adjoining habitat and the presence of large−seeded broadleaves were also considered, to assess the potential threat from grey squirrels. The primary aim of the present study was to collate all recent (post−1990) red squirrel records from central Wales, to identify the remaining red squirrel refugia. Other key objectives were to provide a preliminary habitat assessment of the main sites where red squirrels still occur, and to make initial recommendations for conservation action, as appropriate.
