Squirrel Survey of Cwm-Mynach (2001-2002)
Presence or absence or red and grey squirrels in Cwm-Mynach woods in the Snowdonia National Park. Also a records of tree species from which the records were taken. Red squirrels were reported in the Cwm-Mynach woods in 1998 and 1999 and the work was commissioned to establish whether there is a continued presence of red squirrels in this area. Survey took place on conifer plantations to the east of Mynydd Cwm-mynach within the Snowdonia National Park between November 2001 and January 2002. Squirrel activity was low at the time of survey, which may account for the presence of no red squirrels. Further surveys at a different time of year could be considered. Records where a positive identification could not be made have been tagged as unidentified. In some cases the hair was only identified to family level.

Hair tubes were placed in rows in 5 areas of the woods, covering the area of most recent sightings in the centre of the plantation and the sections of the upper and lower plantations. A full grid pattern could not be established due to access restrictions. In total 48 tubes were deployed in rows in suitable areas. Hair was collected from sticky blocks within the hair tubes and identified by eye. Where this was not possible they were verified under a microscope using a negative staining technique as described by Dagnell et. Al (1995). 144 records were taken, of which 42 have positive results. Grid references for each trap were not recorded. Transect centroid's were estimated from paper maps.
