Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Monitoring: Lamprey in the River Dee (2004)
River, Brook and Sea Lamprey are a designated (Annex II) feature of the River Dee SAC. Assessments of species composition, distribution, abundance and size class composition are of particular interest as an indication of Condition Assessment. The data was collected to help assess the conservation status of Lampreys in the Dee Catchment. Monitoring of the status of Lampreys is required to comply with the reporting requirements of the Habitats Directive. The dataset is made up of a collation of historical data, recorded during the Environment Agency Wales juvenile salmon surveys from 1985 - 2004 and surveys conducted as part of the Countryside Council for Wales project 2002 - 2004. Within the historical data, information has not been broken down to a species or genus level and is only recorded at the family level. Historical records collected 1985 - 2002 were sampled by electro-fishing according to protocols laid out by the \Environment Agency Electric Fishing - Theory and Practice Manual\" (Environment Agency 1998). Sampling was either Quantitative or Semi-quantitative or Timed surveys; precise dates are not given and records are assigned a year only."

In 2002 a semi-quantitative methodology was used, a stretch of river was sampled until either 200 ammocoetes were caught or two hours had elapsed. In 2003 a quantitative methodology was used employing a rigid quadrat framework with a base of 1m2 according to the protocol developed for the LIFE in UK Rivers project (Harvey and Cowx, 2003) . The number of ammocoetes were recorded against sizes classes at a 10mm interval. Sampling from 2004 was also carried out according to protocol developed by Harvey and Coxw and 31 sites were planned to be surveyed between August and October, however due to weather constrains only 3 of these sites were sampled. Only positive records have been uploaded to Recorder and therefore the NBN Gateway.
