Data Monitro Llysywod Afon Dyfrdwy, 2004
River, brook, and sea lamprey are designated Annex II features of the River Dee Special Area of Conservation (SAC). Assessments of species composition, distribution, abundance, and size-class structure are of particular importance for condition assessment. The data were collected to support the assessment of the conservation status of lampreys within the Dee catchment. Monitoring the status of lamprey populations is required to comply with the reporting requirements of the Habitats Directive.
This dataset comprises a collation of historical data collected during Environment Agency Wales juvenile salmon surveys between 1985 and 2004, together with surveys undertaken as part of a Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) project between 2002 and 2004. Within the historical dataset, records have not been identified to species or genus level and are recorded only at family level.
Historical records collected between 1985 and 2002 were obtained through electrofishing surveys conducted in accordance with the protocols outlined in the Environment Agency Electric Fishing: Theory and Practice Manual (Environment Agency, 1998). Sampling methods included quantitative, semi-quantitative, and timed surveys. Precise survey dates are not available, and records have been assigned to year only.

In 2002, a semi-quantitative methodology was employed, whereby stretches of river were sampled until either 200 ammocoetes had been captured or two hours had elapsed.
In 2003, a quantitative methodology was used, incorporating a rigid quadrat framework with an area of 1 m² in accordance with the protocol developed for the LIFE in UK Rivers project (Harvey and Cowx, 2003). The number of ammocoetes was recorded by 10 mm size classes.
Surveys undertaken in 2004 also followed the methodology developed by Harvey and Cowx. A total of 31 sites were scheduled for survey between August and October; however, due to weather constraints, only three sites were sampled.
The original dataset contains both positive and negative records. Only positive records have been transferred to Recorder 6 and made available through the NBN Gateway.
