Bullhead Monitoring for the Usk and Wye Catchments 2007
The bullhead, Cottus gobio, is declining throughout Europe (although still apparently common over its native range in the British Isles) and is listed in Annex II of the EU Habitats Directive as a \species of community interest\". Member states have the duty to designate Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) for such species and to ensure the maintenance of favourable conservation status within the SACs. There are six Welsh rivers designated as SACs for bullhead including the Wye and Usk. The Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) (now part of Natural Resources Wales) is responsible for monitoring the condition of bullhead populations within them and this study represents the first systematic quantitative sampling for bullhead in Welsh SACs for this purpose. The bullhead is a feature on the River Wye / Afon Gwy SACs and River Usk / Afon Wysg SACs in Wales. The purpose of this data capture was to monitor bullhead populations to assess whether Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) management adequately protects that species. This project assessed the population attribute only. No judgement can be made as to whether bullhead is in favourable or unfavourable condition on the Rivers Wye and Usk until the three other mandatory attributes of water quality flow and river morphology have been assessed. The monitoring was of populations of the freshwater fish Bullhead (Cottus gobio) on the River Usk and Wye SAC's in south-east Wales."

The surveys were carried out according to JNCC standard methodology (Cowx and Harvey, 2002) for monitoring bullheads. Survey areas were established based on Countryside Council for Wales and Environment Agency (EA) data (2006-2007). This survey records the presence and populations of bullhead within these two SACs. It also records the presence of other freshwater fish, including, eel, lamprey, minnow, salmon, stone loach and trout. The presents of the invasive species Himalayan / Indian Balsam was also recorded. Comparison between data generated by the present study and those from the 2007 EAW surveys of both SACs suggested that future site condition monitoring should comprise single pass electric fishing but specifically targeted towards bullhead populations (i.e. not as a by product of juvenile salmonid surveys).
