Investigation into the Role of the Ancient Woodland Inventory, Historical Maps and Indicator Species in Identifying Ancient Woodland in Wales (2007)
The results of an experimental study involving desk study, field survey and statistical analysis, which investigated whether a more robust basis for identifying ancient woodland in Wales could be developed. Dataset includes species records from 20 study sites, a provisional list of vascular plant ancient woodland indicator species for Wales, broken down by region, results of statistical tests etc. Overall aim was to investigate whether a more robust basis for identifying ancient woodland in Wales can be developed. This included a comparison of the AWI and Epoc 1 County Series OS maps in terms of the identification of possible ancient woodland and a review of the use and reliability of Ancient Woodland Indicator Species in Wales.

This study was split into two methodologies desk study and field survey. Desk study: Indicator species lists currently in use to evaluate the nature conservation value and/or antiquity of woodland in Wales were collated. A comparison of the AWI and County Series OS maps was undertaken to consider reasons for omission of woodland from the AWI, quality of information, and ease of use. Field survey: Field surveys were conducted at woodland sites in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Powys and Glamorgan. Field work was undertaken at 20 study sites. A total of 81 2ha plots were sampled with at least one survey plot selected at each site to represent each of the different categories of woodland present (categories being defined according to whether the woodland appears on the AWI, Epoch 1 County Series maps or on neither of these). Survey concentrated on vascular plant species lists, additional information recorded included NVC types present, evidence of coppicing, presence of veteran trees and historic features. In addition to this statistical analysis tested for floristic differences and differences in frequency and diversity of plant species between categories of woodland.
