Hydrological Investigations to Underpin Mire Restoration Work at Cleddon Bog Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Monmouthshire, SE Wales (2006)
Cleddon Bog Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) is located around 9 km south of Monmouth, Monmouthshire SE Wales. The site has a valley-head mire which has developed within two connected valley-head troughs. The small catchment of which the site forms the upper reaches is a hanging valley system to the River Wye which runs north-south around 1 km to the east. There is a comprehensive body of evidence which shows that the condition of the mire feature at the site is deteriorating. Over the past few decades this has been marked by a decline in the abundance of key mire species at the expense of purple moor-grass and scrub. It is thought that the causes of this deterioration include drying of the mire surface, cause by catchment afforestation and a range of peripheral and internal drainage measures, coupled with the cessation of historical management practices such as grazing and burning. This dataset was collected to assess the current hydrological regime of the site and provide specific detailed recommendations to support a future programme of hydrological restoration. The objectives of this project were to: - Develop an initial conceptual understanding of the principle water supply mechanisms to the site, with particular reference to valley-flank communities influence by lateral seepage. - Based on the initial conceptual model, undertake a limited programme of field investigation to secure a better understanding of water flow pathways into and within the site. - Identify a range of hydrological restoration options for the site.

The survey positions and related information were levelled to a local site datum through a separate levelling survey. - A hydrological feature and hydro-chemical survey of the site, complemented by photo-documentation. - Analysis and interpretation of a long-term groundwater level dataset. - Detailed consideration of the influences on site wetness including: 1) quantitative consideration of the date of rainfall under various catchment land-use scenarios, 2) consideration of the influence of peripheral hydrological management features (e.g. drains), and 3) consideration of the hydrological properties of the bog vegetation. - Integration and interpretation of the information to develop and unified conceptual understanding of the hydrology of the site, leading to recommendations on future hydrological management.
