Site Dossier for Lichen Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) Features at Pen y Gogarth/Great Orme's Head SSSI
Data collected as part of a data search and lichen survey of Pen Y Gogarth/Great Ormes Head Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The survey was divided into two parts: Part 1 dealt with the taxa that comprise the lichen flora, the origin of the Orme's older records and with the people who collected on the Great Orme prior to the current survey. Outputs include information on lichen communities and habitats and tables showing the conservation status and rarity of each of the records, including those of special importance such as Red listed species. Part 2 involved developing proformas and establishing Common Standards Monitoring for lichens through trials at the site. Outputs include two indirect monitoring site accounts with a summary of lichen interest, table of notable lichen species and management suggestions; site attribute tables for the two sites, and a map showing the extent of the sites. Also included are direct monitoring proformas for 6 sites with details of location, habitat, abundance, species present etc. The 6 sites monitored in this way are mapped to show their locations.

Part 1- Study sites were selected mainly on the basis of notable topographic features such as areas of limestone pavement, cliffs etc. A number of unlocalised 10km square records were also searched for. Microscopic identification, chemical spot tests, UV fluorescence, thin-layer chromatography and reference to lichen floras and relevant taxonomic papers were used to identify species whilst referees in Britain and abroad were consulted to rule on critical taxa. A species list was completed for the site with each taxon given a frequency rating on the DAFOR scale. Specimens resulting from the work have been lodged with the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff. Nomenclature follows Coppins 2002 and information on the conservation status of lichens is based on Woods and Coppins 2003. Part 2- Trials for establishing a baseline for Common Standards Monitoring of lichens at Pen Y Gogarth/Great Ormes Head SSSI carried out over two days in good weather. Two lichen habitats of considerable importance were chosen- limestone pavements and dry inland limestone cliffs. Two monitoring formats were employed- site attribute tables for indirect lichen habitat monitoring and direct monitoring proformas for easily recognisable notable species or communities.
