Cockle and Mussel Stock (bird food) Surveys in the Dee, Traeth Lafan and Burry Inlet 2004
Special Protection Areas (SPAs) are strictly protected sites classified in accordance with Article 4 of the EC Birds Directive. They are classified for rare and vulnerable birds (as listed on Annex I of the Directive), and for regularly occurring migratory species. The Dee Estuary, Traeth Lafan and Burry Inlet SPA support nationally and internationally important populations of wildfowl and waders as well as important cockle fisheries. The removal of cockles and the associated disturbance caused by fishing them needs to be balanced with bird food requirements. The aim of the project is to assess the food requirements of wading birds, such as oystercatcher and knot that over-winter in these areas in order to set monitoring targets and to assess the implications of cockle and mussel fishing scenarios to the bird populations. The purpose of this data capture was to provide data on stock abundance and distribution across the whole of the survey areas. The data collected and its results will primarily be used for site monitoring and also for casework. Longer term work on the Burry Inlet may combine this data with data gathered on bird foraging behaviour, together with site specific data on bird numbers and used in an individual behaviour based model to predict the food requirements of a bird population.

The 2004 cockle and mussel survey was contracted to Aquatic Survey and Monitoring Ltd., who sub-contracted individuals to make up the survey teams in North Wales and South Wales. Three areas were surveyed - the Dee Estuary, Traeth Lafan and the Burry Inlet. Over 400 cockle survey stations (on a grid system) were surveyed in each area, using GPS, 0.1m2 quadrats and a sieve of 2 mm mesh. Cockles retained in the sieve were measured and counted; enabling the production of cockle density maps and estimates of the total cockle populations of each area. Mussel beds in each survey area were also surveyed in a similar way, and all mussels over 10 mm length in each 0.1m2 quadrat were measured and counted. This enabled the estimation of the total mussel populations of each bed. The full analysis of the data will be the subject of a later report in CCWs Marine Monitoring Report Series (West et al. 2004). All data was collected by staff with a background in Biological Sciences using rigid rules laid out in the report methodology. All data entry was subject to auto-validation and conditional formatting. A copy of the data was checked regularly by the project manager for errors. The data was put through a rigorous series of verification procedures to ensure that there were no inconsistencies between the field records, the shellfish measurements and the sub-sample records. The field notebooks and recording sheets were also supplied to the project manager and numerous records were checked for accuracy of the data entry.
