Lower Limit of Marine Intertidal Phase 1 Survey
This is a GIS dataset line dataset depicting an approximation of the Lowest Astronomical Tide, through digitising along a combination of the OS 1:50,000 intertidal boundary and the lowest survey points of the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) marine intertidal phase 1 mapping survey. The purpose of this data capture was to define the lowest boundary of the intertidal zone, which has relevance when defining Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) boundaries for intertidal features. All SSSI's designated after the CCW Phase 1 mapping survey use this as their lowest limit.

Derived from the OS MasterMap intertidal lowest boundary and the CCW marine intertidal Phase 1 mapping survey. The CCW survey provides information on communities within the intertidal zone as a seamless layer. The lowest boundary of the survey, completed during spring tides, approximates to the lowest astronomic tide in most cases, although other factors influence the tide heights such as freshwater input in estuaries and storm surge. The intertidal habitat mapping began in 1996 and was completed in 2005. All work has been undertaken by CCW's in house intertidal survey team. Production of the Lowest Astronomical Tide (LAT) dataset was completed by CCW cartographic unit. The combination of OS features (dated pre year 2001) and CCW mapped features (between 1996 and 2005) does not give an actual boundary, but an indication of some of the possibilities of where the boundary may lie. In dynamic locations, such as estuaries and sedimentary embayments, changing sandbanks and channels makes for an unrealistic LAT. The lowest boundary of the CCW survey, completed during spring tides, approximates to the lowest astronomical tide in most cases, although other factores influence the tide height such as freshwater input in estuaries and storm surge.
