Across Wales Intertidal Monitoring Survey
This dataset comprises of results from intertidal monitoring of Special Area of Conservations (SACs) that contain Wales is undertaken. Work is undertaken to enable reporting on a range of external obligations under Habitats Directive, Water Framework Directive and the inter-agency agreement on Common Standards Monitoring; to harmonise with WFD monitoring in coastal and transitional waters. The work will also be used to inform management decisions on individual sites. Each sample station will be monitored for one of the following SAC sub-features; 1) Under-boulders 2) Sabellaria reef (created by the honeycomb worm) 3) Rockpools 4) Characterizing rock or sediment habitat 5) Zostera beds (seagrass meadows) 6) Nationally rare or scarce species. Work has been carried out from 05/07/2004 and is on-going. The majority of sample stations are visited every 6 years, although some sites where there are particular pressures are visited annually, for example reef features in Pembrokeshire Marine SAC and Zostera beds at Traeth Lafan in the Menai Strait and Conwy Bay SAC. Confidence in certain methods and their data is high, whilst the objectives of some surveys are to develop confidence in the method and data.

Repeat monitoring sample locations were identified from baseline information provided by the Phase 1 Intertidal Mapping Survey. All stations are visited by foot. These sampling stations are available through UKDMOS. All survey work was undertaken by IECS between 2004 and 2005 and reported by feature. Surveys carried out in 2007 were undertaken by ASML and reported by SAC. Monitoring methodologies for each of the sub-features are described in individual reports, available as part of the CCW Marine Monitoring Report series.
