Coastal Sensitivity Atlas
This spatial dataset is an Atlas of Coastal and Marine Resources Sensitive to Oil Pollution in Wales. This data capture aims to highlight sensitive and vulnerable areas across Wales which maybe sensitive to oil pollution. It contains, but is not limited to, information on seabirds, scoter, wetland birds, grey seals, cetaceans, booming plans, protected sites, sand dunes, saline lagoons, sea grass beds and biotopes. This is intended for use by Natural Resources Wales (NRW) staff, but is a legacy Countryside Council for Wales’ dataset. It should be used when providing environmental advice during an oil spill response operation. It's primarily intended as a memory jogger during the early stages of operation. It provides information on the location of environmental resources only, background knowledge of the relative sensitivity and vulnerability of the resources is required when providing advice during marine pollution incidence. Covers the coast of Wales and adjacent coasts of England (east coast of Dee estuary to Hoylake and south coast of Bristol Channel to Porlock Bay). 1st edition published March 2003; currently being updated and 2nd edition to be published early 2009.

This is a collation of a larger number of datasets that get updated in their own right. Methods of data capture are unique to each of the datasets forming the different layers of the Atlas. This is the 2nd edition of the atlas (1st edition was completed in 2003). It provides updated information on the original list of resources, some additional resources (including CCW's advice on use of dispersants) and increased functionality (including a gazetteer to coastal and marine features). There is no data associated to the Contingency Plan itself. Some wildlife datasets are based on incomplete survey coverage e.g. cetacean data is based largely on sightings by volunteer recorders, not from a comprehensive survey; and scoter data is based primarily on detailed surveys of selected areas. Subjective decisions have been made based upon best available information. Some datasets are not available for the English coasts.
- Additional Information
-
This data should be used in conjunction with the MESG Oil Spill Contingency Plan - Fynnon numbers DCT-09-103877, DCT-09-103876. Countryside Council for Wales: Marine Pollution Contingency Plan. Part A and Part B. Volume 1 - Volume 2. The plan should be used in conjunction with the National Contingency Plan for Marine Pollution from Shipping and Offshore Installations (NCP) and any local Standing Environment Group (SEG) Plan.

The following data is considered OS derived data and is therefore jointly owned by NRW and the Ordnance Survey. NRW may release, publish or disseminate this data freely; providing recipients are made aware of use restrictions (See general use restrictions). Part of the dataset is sensitive and restricted. The sensitive data includes information on potentially sensitive biotopes. Sensitive data must be kept confidential; general release is not permitted due to risk of harm to the environment or third parties. Sensitive data may only be released under an appropriate NRW Licence. Requests should be referred to NRW's Access to Information Officer. Data may be released freely if the sensitive records are removed in advance, or shown only at a coarser scale.
