Water Turbidity Data and Macroalgal Depth Distributions on a Transect in the Menai Strait
Presentation of data and analysis of patterns of water turbidity in the Menai Strait between 1961 and 1999 as well as depth distribution patterns of macroalgae (Telegraph Cable transect) at intervals from 1956 to 1999. Analysis of any relationship between the depth distribution of macroalgae and water turbidity patterns. The purpose of this data capture was to ascertain changes in turbidity and depth distribution patterns of macroalgae.

Water Turbidity - Secchi disc readings were taken at Menai Bridge Pier by staff of the Marine Science Laboratories UCNW between 1961 and 1977. The Marine Science Laboratories UCNW recommenced measurements in February 1983.Water clarity (turbidity) measurements were recorded between January 1961 and early 1978. Recordings were resumed in January 1983, with a hiatus from late 1990 until mid 1992 and relatively sparse data from then on. No Secchi disc measurements were made between 1979 and 1982. Algal Depth Distribution - Transects along a disused telegraph cable. Knight-Jones and Nelson-Smith (1956) Hoare and Peattie (1979) and annually since 1983 (NCC). Macroalgal depth distributions were established from the results of a series of surveys of the 'Telegraph Cable' transect line across the Menai Strait. Surveys on the northern shore of the Strait were made in 1956 (3 stations); 1976 (12 stations); 1983 (12 stations); 1984 (60 stations); 1985-90; 1992; 1996; 1999 (72 stations); although since 1990 data has not been collected systematically from the near shore half of the transect (30 - 40 stations). Calculation of Critical Light Level Depths Z-values calculated Series of surveys carried out across the Menai Strait. Review of original surveys and annual NCC surveys to analyse changes in algal depth distribution and turbidity.
