Restoring the Afon Teifi at Cors Caron National Nature Reserve
The Afon Teifi is one of the largest rivers in Wales, and is of considerable national and international importance; designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Approximately 15km from its source, the Teifi runs through the Cors Caron National Nature Reserve (NNR). Within the NNR approximately 1.5km of the Afon Teifi has been altered by straightening and deepening of the river. The northernmost straightening is present on Ordnance Survey maps dating from 1889 whilst the remaining alterations were undertaken in the period 1891 to 1905. The present day aerial photographs show the original meandering channel as sections of open water or vegetated channel. The presence of the original channel has lead to a proposal to restore the river to its former course. A scoping study by the River Restoration Centre has indicated that restoration is a viable option for the Afon Teifi within the NNR. The scheme proposed by former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) incorporated an environmental assessment, stakeholder consultation, pre- and post-project monitoring programmes and technical design. This dataset contains the results of the work undertaken to address the scheme's requirements (Assessment of the current baseline information relating to the existing river morphology and hydrology, the in-channel vegetation and invertebrate fauna, the floodplain and the stakeholder interest). It includes an environmental impact assessment of the proposed restoration and presents a detailed plan of work for the restoration of the Afon Teifi in the NNR with guidance for further research and monitoring.

Levels survey - A total station with an up to date calibration certificate was deployed on site during November 2004. Temporary wooden benchmarks placed approximately every 100m on the downstream left-hand bank of the current river channel and the old channel to be restored. A permanent benchmark established at the large footbridge downstream of the restoration site. The profile of the current channel, Sections A-D of the original channel, and approximately 10m over the top of the river banks were mapped to provide elevation data along both sides of the river. Sediment cores - For sections of the river to be restored the former river bed profile and depth was determined using a set of cores transverse to the course of the former channel. Cores taken at three sites to investigate the depth of the previous river bed in the old channel sections. Water quality - Water quality tested for pH and conductivity at all the sites where invertebrates were sampled. Invertebrates - Basic invertebrate survey conducted using kick and sweep sampling for two minutes over 1m2 on the channel bed and at the river bank margins. Three drift samples were taken in the main river channel where a drift net was left overnight. Six invertebrate colonisers set out in the emergent vegetation of the old channel during the same period.
