Breeding Seabird Surveys of South-west Wales Colonies 1996-1998
South-west Wales has nationally and internationally important populations of nine species of seabirds and a total of thirteen regular breeding species. Following the Sea Empress oil spill at Milford Haven in February 1996, a census of seabird colonies in south-west Wales was initiated in order to assess the impact of the oil spill on population of seabirds breeding in the affected area. This dataset is compiled of the results of breeding seabird monitoring at colonies in south-west Wales in 1996, 1997 and 1998, the three seabird breeding seasons following the Sea Empress oil spill of February 1996. Data collected in all three years of the project have been compared with data collected in previous years, in order to provide an assessment of the impact of the oil spill on local populations of ten species of breeding seabirds (Fulmar, Cormorant, Shag, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Herring Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Kittiwake, Guillemot, Razorbill and Puffin). Data collected for monitoring and comparison purposes to assess the impact of the Sea Empress oil spill on local populations of breeding seabirds.

Whole-colony counts carried out from boats, as well as near-shore colonies counted from land and sea. In all three years of the project census methods and count units used followed the Seabird Monitoring Handbook. Seabird Colony Register Data Forms and 10km Summary Forms were completed for all colonies in the study area, and Colony Register Forms were updated for existing colonies and compiled for new colonies. Completed forms have been submitted to the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC). Copies of all forms and annotated maps are provided in a separate appendix, to be held by Natural Resources Wales (NRW). High monitoring effort after Sea Empress oil spill. Impact assessment on breading seabirds.
