Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) Acoustic Habitat Survey (multibeam) of Habitat and Feature Distribution in Pembrokeshire Marine Candidate Special Area of Conservation (cSAC)
Pembrokeshire Marine candidate Special Area of Conservation (cSAC) is a large area including open coast and the Milford Haven Waterway that has been identified as being of European marine conservation importance. Features of this site include marine species and seabed habitats. The purpose of the Acoustic Habitat Survey was to provide information on the nature and characteristics of the seabed within defined areas of the Pembrokeshire coastline. The dataset contains the results of a project to gather topographical and seabed characterisation information to improve the knowledge of the site and to aid in future site management and feature monitoring. Primary focus- areas of topographical distinction such as reefs, other hard substrata and sandbanks. Areas covered in the Pembrokeshire cSAC survey include; Skomer, Grassholm, Hats & Barrels, Welshmans Bay, East side of Skokholm, St Ann's Head, Milford Approaches and the majority of the Milford Haven estuary upstream as far as Picton Point.

Once mobilisation and all calibrations had been conducted, survey work could proceed. The same basic method of survey was used throughout the whole survey area. Throughout the project the vessel was moored in Milford Dock. When leaving the dock, or while alongside the Mackerel pontoon outside the dock entrance, a course check was made on the navigation systems. All transit time was put to full use by conducting survey to and from site. Once all systems were found to be operating correctly a sound velocity profile was observed. The results of the profile were entered into both the multibeam system and the single beam sounder. Once the vessel arrived at the proposed working location for the day another S/V profile was observed. The results were entered into the relevant equipment. Sidescan sonar was required in the Marine Nature Reserve (MNR), now classified as Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ). This was observed at the same time as the Multibeam data. As a large proportion of this area was relatively shallow the sidescan was towed behind the vessel on a fairly short tow cable. The offset of the fish behind the Central Reference Point (CRP) of the vessel was applied in the Sidescan data capture system (Octopus 460).
