Results of a field survey following the Menai Strait oil spill
Former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) were informed at 09:13 on Sunday the 25th June 2006 that there was an oil spill in the Menai Strait. Oil had been reported to the Coastguard at around 08:15. At the time the information available was that there was an oil/diesel slick, of unknown origin, spreading from Caernarfon up to the Swellies. The tide was flooding at this time with high water around 11:00. The level of the incident was thought to be minor. At 10:25 on 25th June CCW regional officers were on the shore close to the Friction Dynamics factory. The strandline was reported to be contaminated: cobbles splattered with oil. The level of the incident was considered minor/medium at this time. The purpose of this data capture was to assess contamination of species and habitats following the oil spill on the 25th of June 2006.

On the morning of the 26th June 2006 a team composed of CCWs Senior Intertidal Ecologist and members of the Marine Monitoring Team were dispatched to further examine the contamination on the shore. A team of regional marine staff surveyed the shore on the low tide of the same day and observations of a discharge pipe were made by boat on the following day. A stretch of coastline approximately 1km long was surveyed from just south of the National Watersports Centre at Plas Menai to just south of where the spill was believed to have originated. Further site visits were made to the same area on 30th June and 10th July.26/06/06- Access to the shore was made at SH 5011 6600 and a stretch of coastline approximately 1km long was surveyed from just south of the National Watersports Centre to just south of where the spill was believed to have originated. The shore was surveyed for just less than one hour either side of local high water. 27/06/06 - boat-based observations were made around the source of the discharge from CCWs vessel Pedryn. 30/06/06, 07/07/06 and 08/07/06 - further site visits 10/07/06 - visit to shore at Felinheli where a nationally important biotope, Asc.T (Ascophyllum nodosum, sponges and ascidians on tide-swept mid eulittoral rock) has been recorded
