Spatial Analysis of Intertidal and Subtidal Biotopes in Welsh Waters
Maps depicting the distribution of marine biotopes are now available for the whole of the Welsh intertidal and most of the seabed in Welsh Territorial Waters. The former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) now part of Natural Resources Wales (NRW) Phase 1 intertidal database provides the former; and the CCW HABMAP database provides the latter. Using those databases, while taking account of their limitations, CCW wish to know the proportions of each major biotope group that lies within protected areas - i.e. Sites of Special Scientific Importance (SSSIs) and Special Areas of Conservation (SACs). This report provides a spatial analysis of those biotope data. Various data issues mean that these are only very rough calculations; the percentages are not definitive values.

For intertidal habitats, the Phase 1 intertidal survey data was used and the percentages of different biotopes at level 2 and level 3 of the 1997 biotope classification within SSSIs and SACs was calculated. For subtidal habitats, the HABMAP project data was used to calculate percentages of different biotopes at levels 2 and 3 of the 2004 biotope classification in SACs. Project uses data from CCW Phase 1 intertidal survey and the HABMAP dataset.
