Monitoring of Lichen Communities at Stackpole National Nature Reserve (NNR)
Stackpole Warren is noted for its communities of calcicolous terricolous lichens which occupy heavily rabbit-grazed ground with a poor cover of vascular plants. However, available evidence suggests that the amount of open ground and short grazed turf at Stackpole Warren has been decreasing for at least 3 decades. The purpose of this data capture was to examine the terricolous lichen sites at Stackpole Warren for signs of damage which might be attributable to oil pollution from the Sea Empress; to extend monitoring coverage of the terricolous lichen sites at Stackpole National Nature Reserve (NNR); and to assess the success of management in maintaining the notable species and communities.

Condition monitoring of lichens (lichens examined in the field for signs of damage/unexplained mortality). Quadrat recording-5 lichen quadrats established in 1994 were relocated and full species list made. 107 new lichen quadrats were also established in 1997 at regular intervals along transects established on a number of the terricolous lichen sites. Photographs were taken of each quadrat. Within each quadrat a list of lichens, vascular plants and bryophytes was made- each assigned a Domin value. The only data associated with this project is held within the report.
