Fluvial Audit of the River Dee
The results of a CCW commissioned Fluvial Geomorphological Audit of the River Dee to record the morphological features and to identify and understand the geomorphological processes which influence and control the channel activity and the morphological quality of the river system. The River Dee is a dynamic gravel-bed river with evidence of active channel migration in specific locations. The river is of high conservation status being designated a Special Area for Conservation by virtue of its Ranunculus community and in its lower reaches the river channel and its floodplain are designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its morphological and physiographic features. This survey provides a baseline source for assessing site suitability by relating the presence or absence of morphological features to the condition parameters that are identified as habitat preferences for the components of the Ranunculus community. The purpose of this data capture was to develop an understanding of the dynamic geomorphology of the River Dee. The area used for this study included A 130 km length of the Main River of the River Dee, between the Bala Lake (Llyn Tegid) outflow and the Normal Tide Limit (NTL) at the Chester Weir (SJ 408659).
