Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) and N-Alkane Residues in Seabird Eggs after the Grounding of the Sea Empress.
The grounding of the Sea Empress in February 1996 resulted in large-scale oil pollution of the water around the Pembrokeshire coast and its associated island seabird colonies. The accident occurred at about the time that seabirds were returning to their breeding colonies. Therefore, it was possible that breeding birds might transfer oil directly to their eggs through contact with oiled nesting material, feathers and feet, or oral ingestion of sub-lethal amounts of hydrocarbons and subsequent transfer to yolk. Exposure of adult birds and eggs to crude oil or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are present in crude oil, can have adverse effects on egg structure and quality, embryo development and hatching success. This dataset contains the results of an investigation into the PAH and n-alkane content of seabird eggs on the coast of Pembrokeshire following the Sea Empress oil spill. The aim of the study was to investigate whether there was any evidence of hydrocarbon contamination of seabird eggs resulting from the Seam Empress spill.

Increased monitoring efforts and impact assessment following the Sea Empress oil spill. The only data associated with this project is held within the report. The methods of data capture involved measuring the level of contaminants within the breeding populations. N-alkane and PAH concentrations in the eggs of carious coastal species from oil-contaminated breeding colonies around the Pembrokeshire coast. The levels of contamination were compare with those detected in the eggs of the same or similar species, which were collected from the Isle of May, off the NE coast of Britain. The Isle of May was unaffected by the Sea Empress spill. A sample of weather oil from the Sea Empress was also analysed for n-alkane and PAH levels to obtain a fingerprint of the oil that could be compared with residues detected in eggs.
