Biotope studies on rocky shores following the Sea Empress oil spill
This dataset consists of the results of a series of broadscale studies on rocky sea shores around the open coast of South Pembrokeshire following the Sea Empress oil spill in February 1996. The dataset includes maps and diagrams of biotopes, list of regional biotopes referred to in survey and target notes. The purpose of this data capture was to help assess the effects of oil on shore biotopes, communities and species over whole shore areas, to provide information on biotopes, habitat, communities or species which will assist in the development of future monitoring or surveillance strategies, and to investigate the role of Phase 1 studies in surveillance and monitoring of rocky intertidal areas. Surveys were concentrated on the open coast of South Pembrokeshire, from West Angle Bay to Manorbier. All survey carried out by experienced surveyors.

Surveys at the Phase 1 level were carried immediately after the oil spill using adaptations of the methodology defined in the 'Handbook for Marine Intertidal Phase 1 and Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)Habitat mapping' Richards et al (1996) and 'Phase 1 Littoral Biotope Mapping' Smith and Bunker (1997). Good quality colour aerial photographs formed the basis of the survey, detailed target notes were recorded within biotopes using either notes or a high quality video camera as a note book. A photographic record of the study was also taken. Further studies were carried out on selected shores at varying intervals until July 1997.
