Survival Rate of Rehabilitated Guillemots
The results of a study on the post-release life expectancy and oiled and cleaned guillemots has caused concern for seabird rehabilitation. This lead to considerable concern that seabird rehabilitation programmes are of low conservation value and may even prolong the suffering of the rescued birds. The study aimed to: - Calculate the survival rates of oiled, cleaned and released guillemots, - Compare these with the natural survival rates of guillemots which have not been oil, cleaned and released, - Assess whether the survival of rehabilitated birds has increased in recent years as cleaning techniques have improved, - Critically examine the quality of the available data and make recommendations for future improvements.

Most of the analysis within the study used only data from birds ringed with 'guillemot specials' made of stronger incoloy, which were introduced in the early 1980s. BTO ring recovery data was used to calculate the survival rates of oiled, cleaned and released guillemots and compare these with the natural survival rates of guillemots which have not been oiled, cleaned and released. An assessment was also made as to whether the survival of rehabilitated birds has increased as cleaning techniques have improved. The only data associated with this project is held within the report.
