The condition and conservation of montane heath and summit heath vegetation in Wales
This dataset contains the results of an investigation into the relationship between species composition, grazing impacts, nitrogen pollution and nitrogen status of montane heath communities of the Carneddau massif in Snowdonia. The purpose of this data capture was to investigate the links between species composition, grazing impacts, nitrogen pollution and nitrogen status of montane heath communities on the Cardeddau massif. The main objective was to provide information on the current status of the communities in order to indicate whether overgrazing is likely to be the main factor in their decline and whether a reduction in grazing levels might result in the restoration of these communities in North Wales.

A total of 37 sites were established along the westernmost section of the Carneddau ridge. They were selected to be representative of the vegetation occurring along this section of the ridge and to include sites thought to be accessible to sheep but away from human trampling influences. Sites were dispersed with a minimum distance of 30 m between plots. At each site a dung plot was set up and vegetation species composition recorded. At some sites samples of soil and plant tissue were taken for chemical analysis and samples of Racomitrium were collected for nitrate reductase analysis. Data collection involved dung plot monitoring, soil chemistry analysis, plant chemistry analysis, nitrate reductase assay and plant community composition measurements. Data analysis was undertaken to analyse the relationship between species composition, soils and environmental data (altitude, aspect, dung count).
