A collation of National Vegetation Classification (NVC) data for Woodlands in Wales
The National Vegetation Classification (NVC) became established as the standard classification scheme for semi-natural woodlands in Britain, and has wide applications to nature conservation programmes. The NVC is the basis for selection of Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and has been adopted as a fundamental tool for planning and creating new native woodlands. This dataset is a collation of Woodland NVC data from former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) strategic surveys, individual site surveys, records from site visits, interpretation of pre-NVC surveys, and contributions from other bodies. This purpose of this data capture was to provide a useful platform from which to review current understanding of woodland NVC in Wales, and give a snapshot of the woodland resource at the end of the 20th Century. The total area surveyed is around 11,500 ha from 802 sites across Wales. This data collation was also used to identify future research and survey needs. Areas requiring additional survey and any gaps in the understanding of communities could also be highlighted.

A data collation and analysis project. The collated raw data includes estimates of community area, information on surveyor, survey date, number of quadrat samples, site name, grid reference, how areas have been measured, protected status, and various formulae to translate NVC to habitat Action plan types. Reliability of records varies but there has been a tendency to be inclusive with records only rejected where there is good evidence that they are unreliable. Data from surveys carried out between 1985 and 2000.
