Monitoring and Surveillance of Special Protection Areas (SPAs) in Wales
This dataset contains the results from on going monitoring of Special Protection Areas (SPAs) across Wales. SPAs are strictly protected sites classified in accordance with Article 4 of the EC Birds Directive, which came into force in April 1979. They are classified for rare and vulnerable birds (as listed on Annex I of the Directive), and for regularly occurring migratory species. One of the key responsibilities of the statutory nature conservation agencies, such as Natural Resources Wales (NRW), in the UK is the identification and protection of a series of sites intended to conserve important birds. Article 12 under the EC Birds Directive deals with the general reporting obligations of the Member States and Commission. Every three to four years, Member States of the European Union are required to report on implementation of the Birds Directive. This reporting provides information on: the general implementation of the Directive; and the conservation status of individual species listed under the Annexes of the Directive.

Reporting obligations under the Birds Directive, are set out in Article 12, which requires reports on implementation of the Directive every three to four years. The UK has completed twelve reporting rounds in the three year reporting cycle, covering the period from 1983-2019. NRW feed into this work by commenting on the conservation status of birds related to welsh SPAs. Data is collected by NRW through contracting works and conducting census surveys across key SPAs, whilst collating Wales specific data from various other sources. These sources include sightings from volunteer recorders, British Trust of Ornithology (BTO) Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS) and Seabird Monitoring Programme (SMP) coordinated by JNCC.
