Marine Sites: Data Collation
Between October 2001 and June 2002, the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) contracted Sea-Scope to source and collate any Welsh marine biological data which were not in CCW's possession. The main aim of the Project was to collate extant data, enabling them to be accessible to CCW data management systems and linking to other data collation projects nationally. Priority was to be given to data acquired from Special Areas of Conservation (SACs), particularly those relating to SAC moderation features. A higher priority was to be given to sourcing datasets from areas which had limited representation on the MNCR database, in terms of data already held. Also, datasets collected before 1980, with restricted phyla, or with suspected inaccuracies in species identification were to be given a lower priority.

Data was sought from the following categories- intertidal flora and fauna records, benthic flora, invertebrates and fish, pelagic fish and invertebrates, plankton, cetaceans, seals and environmental data e.g. water temp. Sources of data included universities, museums, wildlife trusts, local authorities, environment agency etc. The datasets acquired were usually in paper form e.g. post grad research reports and were subsequently entered into marine recorder. Work was divided into two parts. Part 1 involved preparing an inventory of all major extant sources of data within Wales that were not held by CCW. Part 2 involved collating the data identified by Part 1 and prioritised accordingly into electronic format- data entry onto Marine Recorder database.

The following organisations/individuals were contacted: Universities, Museums, Sea Fisheries Committees, CEFAS, Countryside Council for Wales, English Nature, Joint Nature Conservation Committee, Environment Agency, Local Authorities, Marine SAC Officers, MarLIN, Coastal Wildlife Trusts, other nature conservation NGOs, Water authorities, Environmental consultancies and others. Most datasets acquired were in the form of paper reports (internal research, commissioned research or post-graduate theses), with very little data being available in an electronic format.
