The Mawddach is one of the best examples of a small, drying, bar-built estuary in Britain and, with its mountainous catchment area it has some of the lowest nutrient inputs in Wales. At each sample point sediment surface features and profile were described and photographed and the conspicuous species and morphological characteristics noted. The eight cores collected from each sample station were pooled and the infauna subsequently processed. The fauna present, identified to species level, were recorded on a spreadsheet as were the results of analysis of particle size characteristics of the granulomatric sample.
