Nant Teyrn Freshwater Environmental Change Network (ECN) Site - Biological data
Environmental Change Network (ECN) is network of sites spanning the UK where we conduct environmental monitoring using standard methods. There are currently 12 terrestrial sites and 45 freshwater sites, covering a wide range of upland and lowland habitats including moorland, chalk grassland, woods and forests, farmland, small ponds and streams, large rivers and lakes. ECN is the UK member of the International Long-Term Ecological Research Network (ILTER) and of LTER-Europe. Nant Teyrn is a small upland stream on the out flow from Llyn Teyrn in Yr Wyddfa National Nature Reserve. This freshwater Environmental Change Network (ECN) site is co-located with Yr Wyddfa/Snowdon terrestrial ECN site. This dataset is made up of the biological data collected at the Environmental Change Network (ECN) freshwater site at Nant Teyrn, Snowdonia. Measurements and observations are made on phytoplankton, aquatic macrophytes, epithilic diatoms and macro-invertebrates. The biological variables measured are expected to indicate the possible causes and consequences of environmental change in the aquatic environment.

Phytoplankton- the concentration of phytoplankton chlorophyll is measured weekly. Aquatic macrophytes- species presence, abundance and distribution are recorded annually. Epithilic diatoms - The sampling procedure follows that used for the United Kingdom Acid Waters Monitoring Network and occurs three times per year. Macro-invertebrates - species presence, abundance and deformities are recorded three times per year.
- Additional Information

The pilot study was undertaken during 2006/2007 (results of this study were used) and monitoring has been continuous since. The data is sent to CEH Merlewood where it is checked and transferred into a centralised database managed by the ECN Central Coordinating Unit (CCU) incorporating data from all ECN sites across the UK.
