Intertidal Monitoring of Rocky Reefs in Pembrokeshire Marine Special Area of Conservation (SAC) 2007
Pembrokeshire Marine Special Area of Conservation (SAC) is considered to be one of the best areas in the UK for marine reef habitats, a category within annex 1 of the Habitats Directive. This dataset comprises of the results of re-surveys of the six Milford Haven rocky intertidal transects first established in 2005, and the additional establishment of a similar transect at Nolton Haven in the north of Pembrokeshire. The purpose of this data capture was to repeat a set of six permanent monitoring sites representative of the rocky shore intertidal habitats within the Haven Waterway and last surveyed in 2005 and to present data on the current status of the sites. This data was also used to establish another site outside the Haven to the north at Nolton Haven.

Fieldwork was carried out during five days of spring tides during 2007. A number of techniques used within the survey follow the same methodology as currently used within the MarClim monitoring programme and therefore are comparable to data from other sites around the Welsh coastline. The main surveys conducted were as follows: - Permanent quadrat recording: Relocated the six monitoring sites. At each site records were taken from upper, middle and lower shore heights, with four 1m x 1m quadrats relocated in each zone. Cell counts were made for conspicuous species. - Limpet counts and monitoring: Limpet abundance was recorded from 5 random cells within each quadrat. Up to 200 limpets were systematically selected within the middle zone at each site and the longest basal shell length of each was measured to construct population profiles. - Barnacle abundance: Percentage cover of barnacles was recorded from 5 random cells within each quadrat - Ascophyllum nodosum population structure: 50 Ascophyllum plants were randomly selected from the mid shore zone at Lawrenny Quay. The number of vesicles on the longest unbroken frond of each plant was recorded to provide an estimate of the average age of the plants on the shore.
