Intertidal Sediment Survey of Cosheston Pill with Reference to Shelduck Distribution
Cosheston Pill provides an important sanctuary for a number of wildfowl and wader species including redshanks, curlew and shelduck. Previous studies had shown that in Cosheston Pill shelduck appeared to frequent certain areas of the Pill preferentially- this dataset contains the results of an intertidal sediment survey designed to investigate this preference further. The purpose of data capture was to assess whether or not shelduck feeding area preference in Cosheston Pill were related to variation in the distribution of their prey species and therefore related to spatial variations in the characteristics of the sediments.

Five sample stations were established, three in an area where shelduck were known to congregate and two in areas they avoided. At each station two replicate biology samples and a sample for grain size analysis, organic matter and calcium carbonate determination were collected. All organisms from the sample for biological analysis were identified to the lowest practicable taxon and counted. Statistics were applied to the data to determine the numerically dominant taxa and diversity and dominance indices.
