Remote Sensing Phase 1 Habitat Survey Update
Up-to-date habitat survey of Wales produced by analysis of remote sensing data. The dataset is comprised of contiguous habitat polygons classified into phase 1 categories. It is the product of a large scale remote sensing project aimed at updating the Phase 1 habitat survey carried out in Wales between 1979 and 1999. It was produced in order to have key dataset for Wales which can be used to inform the core work of former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) and its partners, and map specialist habitats or interpretations of habitats. The maps will be checked through field visits and feedback from CCW staff with local knowledge.

Remote sensing is basically any method of collecting information about objects such as lakes, trees, fields and habitat type 'from a distance' - in this case, predominantly by satellite images. Original source data is predominantly satellite images (see metadata entry 'Remote sensing image catalogue'). Other data was derived from aerial photographs and a range of other GIS data sources. A draft map has been produced for the whole of Wales. This has been broken down into 50 projects, eight of which have been refined and re-processed into phase 1 maps (this process will be ongoing subject to funding with the ultimate aim of completing all 50 projects thus having all Wales coverage). Production of the draft map began in 2006 and was completed by the end of the financial year 2007/08, however the training of the systems began in 2004/05. The re-processing of the 50 project areas should be completed over the next two years. A draft map for the whole of Wales has been produced to assess the quality of the general rule base. The rules were fine-tuned one project at a time to get the best local result and to allow quality checking. The images have been combined and analysed to derive an interpretation of the habitat type present. The appearance of habitats varies throughout the year therefore images were compared from different times of year to identify habitats by their characteristic pattern of phenological changes. A draft map of Wales was produced which was then divided into around 50 areas (known as projects) within which it is possible to apply the same interpretation to the colour information form a satellite image. A set of rules were created in a computer programme to interpret the images and determine habitat type present. Ground truth work has also been carried out in the field to calibrate and train the analytical systems to come up with the best interpretation of the habitat type. Maps will be merged using a method known as DS Belief Functions.
