Natural Resources Wales (NRW) Regional Data: Mid-Wales ( Biodiversity Information Service for Powys and Brecon Beacons - BIS )
All records collated from species records mobilised from former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) regional files, held at Newtown, Abergavenny and Llandrindod Wells offices. This dataset was created from species records extracted, computerised and collated from paper records held at former CCW's Regional office files covering the Powys and Brecon Beacons National Park area. The work was carried out under contract by ten Biodiversity Information Service for Powys and Brecon Beacons National Park (BIS) staff members within the NRW offices between 2003 and 2009, as part of CCW Data Mobilisation Project. However, coverage was not complete, as follows:- Newtown: completed 10Km square files and partial completed Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) files, Llandrindod Wells: General files complete. All SSSI files complete Abergavenny: 10km square files complete. SSSI complete. Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and National Nature Reserve (NNR) files not completed Records were entered into Recorder 2002 or Recorder 6 databases. The majority of records are from Powys and Brecon Beacons National Park or within a 5km buffer. Many records are for designated sites (including SSSIs, SACs, National Nature Reserves etc), however, there are also large numbers of records from the wider countryside. The grid references entered will be at resolution of original record and could be 2 or 4 figures, however, the majority of the records have 6 figure grid-references. Some grid references may be from site centroids rather than actual location of the species in question or may have been estimated from map. The purpose of this data capture was to create an electronic archive of species data held on CCW regional files and mobilise this data through BIS. Confidence in data: The source of the original data has not been checked however much of the data originates from CCW staff or other trusted sources. Most of this data has not gone through external verification process but BIS will continue to work with VC recorders to verify records. Recorder has its own validation checks and will not accept data without who, what, where, when present. Some of the grid references entered could be 'estimated from map' if they were not provided. The grid references entered will be at resolution of original record and could be 2 or 4 figures. To avoid duplication each record was checked to see if already in BIS database using MapInfo GIS layer. At this time the operator could check that the grid reference matches location name and is within designated site boundary if appropriate. Operators checked their own entries for accuracy, as resources did not allow for a second operator check. CCW staffs were on hand to help with handwriting or taxonomic issues. Most of the operators on this project originally trained in BIS entering data, and had biological or ecological backgrounds. BIS has recently worked through the surveys to remove outlier records and resolve grid reference issues where possible and will continue to work to remove any duplication.

Numerous biological recording techniques and survey methodologies were used in the collection of these records. The material from which records were derived included the following: reports, site registers, recording cards, protected site condition assessments, Phase 1 and Phase 2 habitat surveys, other general survey work and records of casual observations. Some of the records were produced by CCW staff or by qualified contractors working on CCW's behalf whilst some records have been provided by third parties, or derived from documents, surveys or datasets produced by others, but held in CCW files. Due to the nature of the files and the lack of documentation it has not been possible to determine what proportion of the records within the dataset are NRW owned against third party data. Data also includes species records from former CCW Phase 1 target notes for Breconshire, Montgomeryshire and Radnorshire digitised within BIS offices, not under contract. Newtown: completed 10Km square files and partial completed SSSI files, Llandrindod Wells: General files complete. All SSSI files complete Abergavenny: 10km square files complete. SSSI complete. SAC and NNR files not completed.
