2010 Countryside Council for Wales, Intertidal species diversity layer
This layer was produced for Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) as part of the 'Identifying Marine Biodiversity Hotspots in Wales' project. Species diversity in the intertidal range is measured using species richness, average taxonomic distinctness and number of Welsh Nationally Important Marine Features metrics. A hexagonal grid with a resolution of 1 km is used to present these metrics. The purpose of this data capture was to establish intertidal diversity from known data of the Welsh coastline from the mean high water datum to the mean low water datum covering the intertidal zone.

Species information were collated from the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) and the National Biodiversity Network (NBN) Gateway (Marine Recorder Snapshot), the MarLIN databases and the Data Archive for Seabed Species and Habitats data (DASSH). Distinct survey data were imported into a geodatabase. The full species list was matched against the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) and any unrecognised species corrected. The final list was matched against an edited list of candidate Nationally Important Marine Features (NIMF) to identify those recorded in Wales. An assessment of the suitability of these data for biodiversity assessment was carried out taking into account the source of the data, its age, spatial, taxonomic and methodological accuracy and quality using criteria set out in the ISO 19115 standard for geospatial metadata. A hexagonal grid was used because they offer the best alignment to complex features, such as the Welsh coastline. The optimal size was determined 1km2 for the intertidal region. Metrics used to represent marine biodiversity in Wales were species richness, average taxonomic distinctness and the number of priority features. Each measure was calculated for each broad sampling method type, re-combined by hexagon, and presented as a separate layer on a continuous scale. An assessment of the suitability of data was carried out, taking into account the source of the data, its age, spatial, taxonomic and methodological accuracy. Data were also graded on survey quality using the following three categories with respect to field surveyors: professional and academic; volunteer with expert ID; and volunteer. Derived confidence ratings were recorded in the metadata and low quality data were flagged and removed from subsequent analyses.
