Lamprey Habitat Assessement in the River Usk 1999

The River Usk has been notified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). The three lamprey species that occur within the river are all listed in Annex II of the EU Habitats Directive.

The aim of this study was to investigate the status of lampreys in the River Usk and to consider issues relevant to their conservation. The specific objectives of the study were:

To define the characteristics of lamprey spawning and nursery habitats.

To obtain and summarise information on the distribution of lampreys and their spawning and nursery habitats within the River Usk.

To investigate the potential for using River Habitat Survey (RHS) data to predict the occurrence of lampreys in the River Usk.

To make recommendations to support the monitoring and conservation of lampreys and their habitats.

To monitor the status of lampreys in order to comply with the reporting requirements of the Habitats Directive.

Lineage

Distribution of lampreys was determined by electric fishing at 44 sites throughout the main river and selected tributaries, and potential obstructions to upstream migration were assessed. Confidence in this dataset is high.
