Morphodynamic Modelled Outputs for the Mawddach Estuary
This report summarises the third stage of a modelling research study undertaken by Bangor University, investigating the hydrodynamic and morphodynamic response of representative Welsh estuaries (which include both past and potential future changes to the estuaries, as well as their present form) to a range of mean and extreme climatic conditions. In particular, coastal flood risk and potential for erosion and accretion has been assessed through the medium of high resolution computational models. The Mawddach estuary lies within the Snowdonia National Park, north Wales, and its landscape and environment represents one of the key natural assets which Wales possesses. The purpose of this data capture was to investigate the response of the estuary to future tidal and atmospheric changes. The model has also been used to investigate the response of the estuarine dynamics to potential management strategies such as embankment re-alignment and re-location.

A mathematical model of the Mawddach Estuary has been developed to reproduce the interactions of tidal and fresh water hydrodynamics within the estuary and surrounding low lying areas. The model is based on a TELEMAC Modelling System which calculates the temporal and spatial variations in hydrodynamics (e.g. elevations, velocities, pressure, density) and sediment transport through a finite-element model grid (an unstructured mesh of nodes connected in a triangular framework) which represents the bathymetry of the area. Input data to the model includes bathymetric data from Admiralty charts and LIDAR data. Three grids have been produced against which different scenarios can be modelled. 1) 2-D model of the present day Mawddach Estuary 2) Alterations to represent the past and future 3) Alterations to remove the embankments upstream of Penmaenpool The project extends two previous modelling studies in other representative Welsh estuaries, namely the Dyfi Estuary in mid Wales (Robins, 2009a) and the Burry Inlet in south Wales (Robins, 2009b).
